Having a child with autism, I know what treatment costs – and I know it can be very expensive. VERY expensive. And if you’re here on our site, then chances are good you know this as well. But, really, how expensive is treatment? According to this New York Times article:
- It can add up to $72,000 a year for someone with an extreme case of autism and $67,000 a year for those on the lower end of the spectrum.
- It can cost $3.2 million to take care of a person with autism for his or her lifetime
Those are almost unbelievable figures. However, the reason I am bringing this up is because this same NYT article talks about information and advocacy groups that routinely help parents navigate financial hurdles and provides a roadmap of items to consider. It’s definitely worth a read – you can check it out by clicking here.
Here’s the other thing – the kind of treatment you pursue also impacts how much you spend. And although you want to find a treatment method – or multiple methods – that work best for your child, looking at the cost of treatments could help you navigate through the many options available. Our Treatments section includes an extensive database of autism treatments – and within the overview of each treatment you’ll see a “Cost of Treatment” section that outlines what it typically costs. We hope this is proves to be a helpful tool because, ultimately, the best thing we can all do is arm ourselves with information.
What does autism mean to us today? It means investing in care. What about you?
Best,
Jenifer
